Trinidad & Tobago Driving Theory Test

The regulations exam is the computerised theory test you must pass to progress towards a Trinidad and Tobago driver's permit. It covers road rules, traffic signals and safe driving, and is taken at a Licensing Division test centre using a secure PIN/biometric system. Since 1 May 2023 it is booked through the Online Provisional Permit System (OPPS).

The Ministry of Works and Transport does not publish an official question count or pass mark for the computerised regulations exam, so we do not state a figure — any specific number you see on other sites is unofficial. The best preparation is to practice a broad mix of road-rule and road-safety questions until you can answer confidently and consistently.

Driver testing and licensing are run by the Licensing Division of the Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT), headed by the Transport Commissioner. The Licensing Division administers the computerised regulations exam and the practical driving test directly.

The Provisional Permit fee is TT$210 for all classes, and this includes your first attempt at the regulations exam. If you need to resit the exam, each retake costs TT$175. Fees are set by the Ministry and can change, so confirm the current amount with the Licensing Division.

Since 1 May 2023 you apply through the Online Provisional Permit System (OPPS). After your Provisional Permit is issued you can book a regulations-exam appointment no sooner than 10 calendar days later. If you fail, a retake can be booked no earlier than 7 calendar days after your last attempt.

First obtain a Provisional (Learner's) Permit, which is valid for one year. Then pass the computerised regulations exam. A practical driving-test appointment can be scheduled no sooner than 21 calendar days after you pass the regulations exam.

The minimum age is 17 for a motorcycle (Class 1), a wheel tractor (Class 2) or a light motor vehicle / private car (Class 3). For the heavier classes (4–7) you must be at least 21 and already hold a Class 3 or higher licence.

A valid driving permit from a country listed by the Minister lets you drive for three months from the date you arrive, for the class it authorises. A valid International Driving Permit is accepted for as long as it remains valid. After that, you need a Trinidad and Tobago permit, which means passing the regulations exam and driving test.

Trinidad and Tobago drives on the left, and traffic goes clockwise around roundabouts. For an ordinary private car the speed limit is 80 km/h outside a built-up area and 50 km/h within one (built-up areas include Port-of-Spain, San Fernando and Arima). The drink-drive limit is 0.08% (35 µg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath). Road traffic is governed by the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 48:50.
