Turks and Caicos DMV: Offices, Hours, Fees and Services
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is the Turks and Caicos Islands Government department that issues driving licences, learner's permits and visitor's permits, runs the sign, written and road tests, and registers vehicles. It has four offices: the main office in Town Centre Mall, Providenciales, plus branches on Grand Turk, North Caicos and South Caicos, all open Monday to Thursday 8:30am to 4:00pm and Friday 8:30am to 3:30pm. The main line is (649) 338-5029 and the email is [email protected]. ExamReady is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with the DMV; if you are preparing for the tests, start with the free Turks and Caicos practice test.
Key takeaways
- The DMV replaced the old Road Safety Department; the law still calls its head the Director of Road Safety and Transportation. The official website is gov.tc/dmv, not dmvtci.com.
- All four offices keep the same hours: Mon to Thu 8:30am to 4:00pm, Fri 8:30am to 3:30pm. Main office: Town Centre Mall, Providenciales, (649) 338-5029.
- Proof of identity for most services means your passport plus one status document (TCI Status Card, Work Permit Card, Residence Permit and similar).
- Core fees: learner's permit $30, sign test $20, written test $20, road test $30, driving licence $150 (classes C, D, E, G) or $375 (classes B, H), visitor's permit $30.
- Window tint limits of 50% front / 30% rear have applied since 1 December 2022, and every vehicle has needed the new island-specific plates since 30 November 2023.
What is the Turks and Caicos DMV?
The DMV is the government department that regulates drivers, their vehicles and certain vehicle-related businesses in the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is currently listed under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Religious Affairs and Transportation.
The department was formerly the Road Safety Department, and that older name lives on in the legislation. Both the Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap 13.01) and the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Ordinance (Cap 13.02) define the "Director" as the Director of Road Safety and Transportation. If a form or notice refers to the Road Safety Department, it means the DMV.
The learner's permit, the three tests and the licence itself all go through the DMV. The step-by-step guide to getting a driver's licence in Turks and Caicos walks through that sequence in order.
Where are the DMV offices and when are they open?
All four offices keep the same hours: Monday to Thursday 8:30am to 4:00pm and Friday 8:30am to 3:30pm. No office is listed for Middle Caicos or Salt Cay.

Which services does the DMV offer and what should I bring?
The DMV services page sets out what each transaction needs. Most start with the same proof-of-identity bundle, so sort that out first.
Proof of identity
The DMV defines proof of identity as your passport plus one of the following: TCI Status Card, Work Permit Card, Permanent Residence Certificate, Government stamp in passport, Government-issued contract offer letter, Government-issued title deed, or Residence Permit.
Learner's permit
Available only at a DMV office. A new permit needs proof of identity; a renewal or replacement also needs the payment receipt. The permit costs $30, lasts six months and can be renewed every six months. The minimum age is 17.
Sign test, written test and road test
No application form is needed. For the written and road tests the DMV asks for proof of identity, a valid learner's permit and the payment receipt. For the road test you must also supply your own roadworthy vehicle of the class you are testing in. The DMV does not publish the question count, pass mark or time limit for the sign or written tests. The Turks and Caicos driving test guide explains what each test covers.
New, renewed and replacement licences
A new licence needs proof of identity and the certificate of competence the examiner issues when you pass the road test. Holders of a valid US or Commonwealth licence or an International Driving Permit can apply on the strength of that document without sitting the tests. A renewal needs proof of identity and the expired licence, and can be lodged up to three months before expiry. A replacement needs proof of identity and a police report.
Visitor's driving permit
For non-residents who want to drive beyond the 30 days their US, Commonwealth or IDP licence allows after entry. Bring your passport with the immigration officer's stamp and your valid non-TCI licence. No form is required; the permit costs $30 and lasts three months. The visitors' driving guide covers the rental and foreign-licence rules in full.
Vehicle registration
The DMV registers vehicles and issues the licence sticker that must be displayed on the vehicle. Under the Road Traffic Ordinance the Director registers a vehicle only once satisfied that third-party insurance is in place, so arrange insurance first. A change of ownership must be notified within seven days.

What has changed at the DMV recently?
Several changes since 2022 still matter at the counter and at the roadside.
- Temporary identification plates (from 1 August 2022). The Director may issue a temporary "T" plate valid for up to three months, extendable once for a further three months.
- New island-specific licence plates (from 1 December 2022). Owners had until 30 November 2023 to collect new plates. From that date all vehicles should display the new plate, with the licence class shown by plate type. Driving on the wrong plate is a $300 ticket.
- Window tint limits (from 1 December 2022). Light transmission must be at least 50% through the windscreen and front windows and at least 30% through the rear windows. Police quote the fine as $250 per window.
- Licence collection notices. The DMV news page posts batch notices when printed licences are ready for collection, as it did in May 2024. If your card has not arrived, check gov.tc/dmv/latest-news before calling.
- E-scooter advisory (22 July 2026). A joint DMV and police advisory confirmed that e-scooters are motor vehicles. Riding one on a public road requires a driver's licence of the correct class, minors may not ride them, and parents who allow it will be held accountable.
Is dmvtci.com the official DMV website?
No. The only official DMV website is gov.tc/dmv, on the Turks and Caicos Islands Government domain. The site at dmvtci.com styles itself "Department of Motor Vehicles - TCI" but is not a government domain, and its claims about DMV systems are not confirmed by the government. Send email only to [email protected].
How can I make a DMV visit go smoothly?
- Bring the full identity bundle. Passport plus one status document is the baseline for almost every service. A passport alone is not enough.
- Pay first and keep the receipt. The DMV lists the payment receipt among the documents for tests, renewals and replacements, so you cannot sit a test without it.
- Renew early. Renewals can be lodged up to three months before expiry, and a late renewal still runs from the original expiry date, so waiting gains nothing.
- Study before you book a test. The sign test draws on the 49 prescribed signs in the Road Traffic Regulations, all in the Turks and Caicos road signs library, and the written test covers the rules of the road. The free practice test covers both.
