Bermuda Driving Theory Test

To get a Bermuda driver's licence you must first pass a written exam administered by the Transport Control Department (TCD) at 11 North Street, Hamilton. The exam is electronic (computer-based) and tests your general knowledge of the rules of the road, speed limits and signage, all drawn from the official Traffic Code Handbook.

The Transport Control Department does not publish an official question count, pass mark or time limit for the written exam, so we do not state a figure - any specific number you see on other sites is unofficial. The best preparation is to study the Traffic Code Handbook and practice a broad mix of road-rule, speed-limit and sign questions until you can answer confidently and consistently.

Per gov.bm, the written exam costs $38.00 for auxiliary cycles, $38.00 for motorcycles and $54.00 for 4-wheel vehicles. A driver's licence for applicants under 65 is $50.00. Fees are in Bermuda dollars, which are on par with US dollars.

Bring your completed Driver's Licence Application, which includes certification by a registered Bermuda doctor that you are fit to operate a vehicle, plus proof of identity: a birth certificate, a valid passport, or a work permit. New residents must show they will be resident in Bermuda for 30 days or more.

Before. In Bermuda the sequence is: pass the written exam first, then purchase a learner's permit, then take the practical test at TCD grounds. The learner's permit is valid for six months and can be renewed once for another six months. While learning, the vehicle must display red 'L' plates front and rear, only a licensed driving instructor may teach you for payment, and no passengers other than the instructor are allowed.

No. Driving licences issued in other countries are not accepted in Bermuda, so everyone who wants to drive a car - including new residents and work-permit holders - must pass the TCD written exam and practical test. Visitors do not rent cars in Bermuda; they typically rent livery (auxiliary) cycles instead.

The national speed limit is 35 km/h on all roads - one of the lowest in the world. Lower limits apply in specific zones: 25 km/h in the Town of St. George's and at Dockyard, 25 km/h at L.F. Wade International Airport, 15 km/h at Somerset Bridge and Hamilton Wharf, and 8 km/h at St. George's Wharf. These limits apply to all vehicle classes and are a favourite exam topic.

You must be 18 for private cars, motorcycles over 50 cc, buses, taxis and heavy trucks. From age 16 you can ride a 50 cc auxiliary cycle under the Bermuda Youth Licence (BYL) after completing Project Ride; BYL holders may not carry passengers and may not ride between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Bermuda drives on the LEFT. At crossroads and junctions with no stop signs you give way to vehicles entering from your LEFT, while at roundabouts you give priority to traffic approaching from your RIGHT. When traffic lights are out, junctions work as four-way stops: first to arrive, first to move, after a complete stop. Most of the island has no traffic lights at all, so roundabout and junction rules matter. You must also give way to a bus signalling to pull out from a bus stop.
