Study original Cayman Islands driving test practice questions with answers, rule-based explanations, topic guidance and the official DVDL theory test format.

Quick answer: The Cayman Islands driving theory test has 40 questions and normally lasts 40 minutes. You must answer at least 80% correctly, which means 32 correct answers, under regulation 8 of the Traffic Regulations, 2026 Revision.

The questions below are original ExamReady practice questions based on Cayman legislation and the official Road Code. They are not copied, recalled or leaked DVDL questions, and they do not claim to predict the exact questions you will receive.

What to know before you practise

  • Study the rule behind each answer instead of memorising the option letter.
  • Expect knowledge of road signs, markings, safe driving, junctions, roundabouts and relevant traffic law.
  • Use the official sources as your authority if a practice explanation and the current law ever differ.
  • For a day-by-day revision routine, use the Cayman Islands theory test study guide.

Official Cayman DVDL theory test format

Test detailOfficial requirement
Number of questions40
Normal time allowed40 minutes, or another period approved by the Director
Pass markAt least 80%, equal to 32 of 40
Permitted question formatMultiple choice, multiple response or another form determined by the Director
Main study materialOfficial Road Code, Traffic Act and Traffic Regulations

The current regulations define the legal format. An earlier official DVDL touchscreen exam brochure describes a computer-based test that shows one question at a time. It describes four possible responses with one answer for each question, but the newer regulations allow multiple-response questions and other formats. Read every on-screen instruction carefully.

What topics should you expect to study?

DVDL's test scheduling guidance tells candidates to study the Road Code for traffic signs, road markings, traffic lights and the general duties of a driver. It also identifies relevant parts of the Traffic Act and the Traffic Regulations. That makes the following a practical question-review checklist:

  • Signs, signals and markings: orders, warnings, information signs, traffic lights, stop lines, lane lines and parking restrictions.
  • Junctions and priority: stop and give-way rules, uncontrolled junctions, turning traffic and pedestrians.
  • Roundabouts: approach lanes, priority, signalling, clockwise travel and safe exits.
  • Speed and stopping: posted limits, school zones, following gaps and changes for wet roads.
  • Safe vehicle control: observation, mirrors, blind spots, signalling, braking, overtaking and merging.
  • Road-user safety: seat belts, child restraints, school buses, cyclists, pedestrians and emergency vehicles.

Use the Cayman Islands road signs guide for focused sign revision, then mix sign questions with rule-based scenarios.

ExamReady practice questions with answers

Practice notice: These are original ExamReady questions, not official DVDL exam questions. Each explanation points to a rule in the official material so you can learn why the answer is correct.

1. How many correct answers are needed to pass the 40-question theory test?

A) 28   B) 30   C) 32   D) 36

Answer: C, 32. The required score is at least 80%. On a 40-question test, that equals 32 correct answers. Treat 32 as the pass threshold, not a study target. Aim to understand every missed rule before test day.

2. What speed applies in a school zone when the amber lights are flashing?

A) 10 mph   B) 15 mph   C) 25 mph   D) 30 mph

Answer: B, 15 mph. Regulation 10 sets a 15 mph school-zone limit when amber lights are flashing. It also applies when road markings or signs are posted, so look for every form of school-zone control.

3. At a roundabout, which traffic must you normally give way to?

A) Traffic from your immediate left   B) Traffic from your immediate right   C) The largest vehicle   D) Traffic waiting behind you

Answer: B, traffic from your immediate right. The Road Code says to give way to vehicles approaching from your immediate right unless signs, road markings or traffic lights direct otherwise. Also watch traffic already circulating and do not assume another driver will signal correctly.

4. Which direction does traffic travel around a Cayman roundabout?

A) Clockwise   B) Anticlockwise   C) Either direction   D) The direction with fewer vehicles

Answer: A, clockwise. Drivers must pass to the left of splitter islands on entry and travel clockwise around the central island. Choose the correct approach lane early and follow signs and markings if they modify the usual lane pattern.

5. What following gap does the Road Code teach for normal conditions?

A) One second   B) Two seconds   C) Three seconds   D) Five seconds

Answer: B, two seconds. Choose a fixed point and count after the vehicle ahead passes it. If you reach the point before finishing the two-second count, drop back. The Code says to double the gap to four seconds on wet or slippery roads.

6. Two vehicles reach a four-way stop at the same time. Who should go first?

A) The vehicle on the left   B) The faster vehicle   C) The vehicle on the right   D) The larger vehicle

Answer: C, the vehicle on the right. Every vehicle must first come to a complete stop. The first vehicle to arrive normally proceeds first. If vehicles arrive at the same time, give way to the vehicle on your right.

7. A broken centre line becomes longer while the gaps become shorter. What does this mean?

A) A hazard is ahead   B) Parking is permitted   C) The road becomes one-way   D) You must increase speed

Answer: A, a hazard is ahead. The changing line pattern warns you to reassess the road ahead. Do not cross unless the road is clear and you are overtaking or turning off safely.

8. May you overtake across an unbroken white centre line?

A) Yes, at night   B) Yes, if the road looks empty   C) No   D) Only when following a truck

Answer: C, no. The Road Code says you must not overtake on that part of the road. A clear view does not cancel the marking. Signs and markings give instructions even when traffic is light.

9. Who gives way when one traffic lane merges into another?

A) Traffic already in the lane   B) Merging traffic   C) The slower vehicle   D) The vehicle on the left

Answer: B, merging traffic. Signal early, check mirrors and blind spots, adjust your speed and enter only when a safe space is available. Traffic entering the lane must give way to traffic already using it.

10. What should you do before changing lanes?

A) Signal and move immediately   B) Check mirrors and blind spots, signal, then move when clear   C) Sound the horn   D) Accelerate before looking

Answer: B. The Road Code applies mirror and observation checks, signalling and a safe manoeuvre to lane changes. A signal communicates your intention, but it does not give you priority or make an unsafe gap acceptable.

11. Can you overtake a school bus that has stopped or is slowing with flashing lights?

A) Yes, below 15 mph   B) Yes, if no child is visible   C) No   D) Only from the right

Answer: C, no. The Road Code says not to overtake while the school bus is displaying flashing lights and has stopped or is slowing. Wait until the lights are off and the bus has moved away.

12. Where must a rear-facing child restraint not be fitted?

A) Beside a closed window   B) In a seat protected by an active frontal airbag   C) In the rear of a vehicle   D) On a fabric seat

Answer: B. The Road Code warns that an active frontal airbag can cause serious injury or death to a child in a rear-facing restraint. Follow the restraint manufacturer's fitting instructions as well as the Cayman rule.

How to review every wrong answer

A score tells you how many answers were correct. A mistake review tells you what to fix. Use this four-step process after each practice set:

  1. Name the topic. Classify the mistake as a sign, marking, junction, roundabout, speed, vehicle-control or safety question.
  2. Write the rule in plain language. Do not copy only the option letter. For example: "At the same arrival time, give way to the vehicle on the right at a four-way stop."
  3. Check the official source. Read the surrounding paragraph, not only one sentence. Exceptions and sign-controlled situations often change the answer.
  4. Answer a new scenario. Change one detail, such as dry roads to wet roads, or an uncontrolled roundabout to one controlled by lights. This tests understanding rather than memory.

Keep a short mistake log with the question topic, your incorrect reasoning, the correct rule and the date you reviewed it. Retest weak topics before taking another full simulation. When you want a timed mixed set, take the free Cayman Islands practice test.

Test-day checklist

  • Book the written-test appointment through DVDL eServices and confirm the location and time.
  • Check the current identification requirements on DVDL's booking page, which asks for valid photo identification, such as a passport. The written-test application form lists the application details and CI$25 fee.
  • Budget for the current CI$25 examination fee shown by DVDL, and keep your booking or payment confirmation available.
  • Arrive with enough time to complete any required pre-test steps and follow the examiner's instructions.
  • Do not bring study notes, a phone or another electronic storage device into the examination room. The touchscreen brochure says such materials are not allowed.
  • Read whether the screen asks for one answer or more than one. Use any review feature exactly as the system and examiner instruct.

Frequently asked questions

Are these official Cayman Islands driving test questions?

No. They are original ExamReady practice questions built from official Cayman rules. DVDL does not endorse this page, and the questions are not presented as copies or recollections of the live exam.

Is every DVDL theory question multiple choice?

The current Traffic Regulations permit multiple-choice, multiple-response or another form determined by the Director. The older touchscreen brochure describes four choices with one correct answer, so follow the instructions shown on your actual test.

Can I skip a question and return to it?

The official touchscreen brochure describes a review function for skipped questions and says no more than three may be skipped. Because the brochure predates the 2026 regulations, confirm the current on-screen rules and examiner instructions rather than relying on an old interface detail.

What should I study besides road signs?

Study the general duties of a driver, road markings, traffic lights, junctions, roundabouts, safe following, overtaking, parking and safety around other road users. DVDL also directs candidates to relevant parts of the Traffic Act and Traffic Regulations.

What happens if I fail the written test?

The touchscreen brochure says an applicant may apply again for the next available time or book a later appointment after paying the prescribed fee. Check DVDL's current booking page for the latest appointment and payment procedure.
